BRIENGO TRUCH TRAIL

Touristic
Request information

The itinerary winds its way through the northernmost part of the Bessa where the valley of the Viona, the torrent that generated the goldfields, flows into the plain. The landscape is very lively with high morainic ridges covered in woods, erratic boulders and a magnificent viewpoint: Truch Briengo. The archaeological focus of the itinerary is the so-called "Castelliere" settlement.
From the end of the car park, the path climbs directly into the woods along a rough surface cobbled track, which continues until it meets, on the right, the imposing structure known as the "Castelliere" because of its fortified appearance. This is one of the most complex and mysterious archaeological monuments in Piedmont. Studies and researches carried out so far have not yet clarified all the questions that this extraordinary and complex structure poses. A complex system of small canals, niches and wells, dug into the walls, as well as a large water collection basin on the top of the structure, show that the flow of rivulets along the slopes of the structure and into the niches and wells is the very element to interpret the function of "Castelliere". An element connected to the ritual and cult of the flowing waters.
Pat "Castelliere", the path continues along some flat areas and reaches a grassy area from which a large erratic boulder emerges solitary. Beyond the meadow rise the remains of the Bornasco-Vermogno moraine.
Following an easy cart track, the route soon reaches the high ground of "Truch Briengo" (a more accentuated prominence of the moraine) at 440 m altitude. From the top, the view extends from the Biellese Alps to the plain and the Serra moraine.
The trail continues down along the dirt road that surrounds the "Truch" to the hamlet of Briengo below in the municipality of Mongrando, and then returns to the parking lot along a cart road.
N.B. The Sala Biellese - Mongrando municipal road shown on the map is not passable by car and can only be driven along in part.
