WINTER CLIMBS
Whether in winter or in summer, in the magnificent setting of the Oropa basin, both “Monte Mucrone” and “Monte Rosso” offer remarkable opportunities to mountaineering enthusiasts who wish to put themselves to the test on well-equipped, mixed climbing routes.
“Monte Mucrone”, which is very similar to the more famous Ben Nevis, has a little channel as a track and can, in proportion, be compared with the slope of the North Face of the Eiger.
The “Monte Camino - Monte Rosso” traverse is, in proportion, similar to the “Liskamm” crossing while “Camino”’s northern ramp could seem like a miniature of that of “Tour Ronde”.
If we raise the level somewhat and try to pit ourselves against routes such as the “Piacenza” face, we come to a better understanding of what winter climbing, with its inherent difficulties,is all about.
SUGGESTED ROUTES:
“Monte Rosso” northern crest: Classic, mixed climbing route.
“Mucrone” via the route “Aspettando Nessi”: Delightful, mixed climbing route.
“Mucrone” via the winter Channel: A great, mixed climbing route.
“Mucrone” north-east channel: New winter route.
