SAINTS PETER AND PAUL CHURCH

Request information

The first certain mention of the priory appeared in 1092: the foundation is closely linked, in its early stages, to the Counts of Pombia, then Biandrate. During the Middle Ages, the monastery grew and consolidated in terms of assets, but at the same time, it was involved in serious wars, sometimes damaging its buildings. The final centuries of the Middle Ages saw a period of crisis, culminating in the institution of the commendation in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the end of the monastic institution in the last years of the 16th century, when the church turned into a parish church.

The structure of this complex reflects the many events that characterised its history and is the result of construction, rebuilding and progressive additions.

Finally, the building in the rear courtyard to the east of the church is very interesting: it is possibly a second church for the monks and still shows clear traces of its medieval layout.

Location: Castelletto Cervo (Baraggia and Plain)
