Monastic Community of Bose

Request information

"Last rice fields, centuries-old trees, a golden mine abandoned, then a slope scattered with castles and sanctuaries [...]. Above, set apart in a small valley, a bunch of small houses and a chimney smoking, the monastery". This is how the journalist Paolo Rumiz describes Bose in "Gerusalemme perduta", the report of his pilgrimage looking for Eastern Christians, from Mount Rosa to the Holy Land.

Set in a wonderful natural landscape, close to the church of San Secondo, the best example of Romanic art in the Biella province, Bose is one of most famous monastic communities in Europe. It includes men and women from different Christian faiths: Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox. Founded and led by the charismatic Prior Enzo Bianchi and active since 1965, it currently includes about eighty members of seven different nationalities, almost all lay, according to the early monk tradition.

The community carries out several activities: research, detailed study and dissemination of Bible content, patristics and lithurgy but also agriculture, beeskeeping, carpentry, pottery, tapestry and food (baked products, jams and herbal infusions).

Anyone can stay in Bose and follow in-depth courses and spiritual meetings about specific spiritual topics or simply share for a period of time the daily routine of life in the community. Besides sharing the common prayer three times a day and the daily lectio divina on the daily Gospel text, the community proposes days of individual spiritual retreat guided by a brother or a sister of Bose.

Musical entertainment is also organized, such as the Concerti Vesperali at the setting of the day of some important festivities in the lithurgic year.

How to reach the community:

Motorway A4, exit Santhià, go on towards Biella crossing Cavaglià, Salussola, Cerrione Fraz. San Sudario and finally Magnano. Before the center of the small village Magnano, follow the indications and turn right to Bose.
Motorway A5, exit Albiano, go on towards Bollengo and then to Magnano, from here follow the indications to Bose.

Location: Magnano (Viverone, Serra and Bessa)
